Opportunity classes applications for 2024 now open

Is your child in Year 4 and looking for a new challenge? Consider applying for an opportunity class for Year 5 entry in 2024.

Don't delay. Applications close 15 May 2023.

What are opportunity classes?

Designed for intellectually gifted and high-potential students, opportunity classes are for students who love learning and desire a challenge. These classes offer specialised teaching methods and support students' well-being while grouping them with other gifted students.

Where are they located?

You can apply for opportunity classes no matter where you live.

There are 76 primary schools with opportunity classes in NSW each year, including 45 in metropolitan Sydney and 30 in rural or regional centres. In addition, rural and remote students can take a virtual class through Aurora College, which is offered in 618 authorised host schools (PDF 231 KB).

To make access fairer for under-represented students, the Equity Placement Model provides provisions for students from low-socio-educational-advantage backgrounds, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students, rural and remote students, and students with disabilities.

How to apply

Apply by 15 May 2023 through the free online opportunity class placement application.

After submitting an online application, your child will be invited to sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test on 27 July 2023. Acceptance into opportunity classes is based on students' academic merit.
